ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia Note: Further information on known problems and their possible solutions, answers to commonly asked questions, and technical assistance is available on the TCE+ Web site, at http://www.tceplus.com or http://tceplus.com. Installation Instructions ------------------------- To begin the installation process, run SETUP.EXE from the CD-ROM. It is highly recommended that you exit all applications before installing The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia. Other programs and drivers might interfere with the installation and calibration processes. If problems persist, try restarting Windows and running Setup again. For Windows 95 and Windows NT to install the Encyclopedia ONLY use the product's installation process. DO NOT use the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Disk Compression ---------------- If you are using a disk compression utility, the available hard disk space reported to you might not be accurate. Disk compression utilities can only estimate available hard disk space. If the installation process is not successful, you might need to free additional hard disk space. QuickTime for Windows Installation Problems ------------------------------------------- There are several known problems you may run into while installing QuickTime for Windows. » Software applications install QuickTime for Windows differently. The installation might fail if you are installing over a previous version of QuickTime for Windows, or if you have played a QuickTime movie in the current Windows session. If the installation fails, restart Windows and try running Setup again. » On Windows 95 and Windows NT, if you install QuickTime for Windows over an older version you have to restart Windows after the installation is completed. » In some cases the explicit uninstall of older versions of QuickTime may be required to "clean-up" your system before the installation of the newer version. (In the QuickTime group there should be both a re-install and uninstall program and in some cases, the old version of QuickTime must actually be re-installed before uninstall can work). Further information on installing QuickTime for Windows, and information on how to optimize video performance on your computer, can be found in the Readme file for QuickTime, called READ_QTW.WRI (for Windows 3.x) or READQT32.WRI (for Windows 95 and Windows NT). Also, see the section on slow response and poor video quality below. Internet Updater ---------------- If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can download periodic updates to the Encyclopedia without leaving the program. Just choose "Get Internet Updates" from the File menu. Potential Problems with the Internet Updater -------------------------------------------- If you are not already connected to the Internet when you choose "Get Internet Updates" from the File menu, the system will try to establish a connection for you. In some cases this may not be possible and you will receive a "Could not connect to host" message. If you receive this message, first connect to the Internet as you normally do. Then try "Get Internet Updates" again. If you are using Windows 3.1x, depending on your particular connection to the Internet, you may experience difficulties getting Internet updates. You may need to contact your Internet Service Provider to ensure that your computer's WINSOCK is visible to the Encyclopedia. If you are using Windows 3.1x and are running into "Insufficient Memory" problems when extracting updated files, you should try freeing up some conventional memory. The Updater needs conventional memory in order to extract the update files. If you are using Windows 3.1x and receive an "Error 16: Could not start Internet Updater", you must restart Windows. Then, before starting the Encyclopedia, manually connect to the Internet and try "Get Internet Updates" again. If you use an ATI graphics adapter, the picture you see on the screen while your Encyclopedia is updating may appear distorted or corrupted. This will not affect the proper operation of the Encyclopedia or the updates in any way. Manual Procedure for Downloading Internet Updates ------------------------------------------------- - Connect to the Internet. - Start your web browser software (for example, Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer). - Go to the Encyclopedia's URL. It must be typed exactly as it appears below, including all capitalization and punctuation. ftp://encyuser:u238Heqr@tceplus.com/tceplus/transfer/UPDATES.EXE - When asked to save this file, save it into the directory where you installed the Encyclopedia. - Once the transfer is complete, use Windows Explorer or Windows File Manager (on Windows 3.1x) to navigate to the Encyclopedia installation directory. Make sure the Encyclopedia is not currently running. - Double-click on UPDATES.EXE. This will extract the update files into the Encyclopedia directory. - Once this is complete, you can restart the Encyclopedia. For Users of Large Fonts ------------------------ If you are using Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 or Windows NT with Large Fonts, some screen text may get cut off, especially in the Quiz section of the program. To fix this problem, simply change your Windows setup to use Small Fonts. In Windows 95 and Windows NT, go to the Start menu and choose Settings, then Control Panel, then Display, then Settings, and finally Font Size. In Windows 3.1x, choose Windows Setup from the Main program group, choose Change System Settings from the Options menu, and pick Display Type. Uninstalling the Encyclopedia ----------------------------- You can uninstall The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia in Windows 3.1x by double-clicking on the Uninstall icon in the Program Manager group for The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia. In Windows 95, go to the Start menu and choose Settings, then Control Panel, and then double-click on Add/Remove Programs. If you are using Windows 95, and have just uninstalled the Encyclopedia you must restart Windows before attempting to re-install the Encyclopedia. Disk Full Errors ---------------- » If you encounter these errors while installing The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia, try deleting unnecessary files on your hard disk to increase available disk space. "Read Errors" and Long Delays ----------------------------- » Defective CD-ROM discs are very rare. Make sure your disc is clean and free of scratches and fingerprints, if you experience problems like "Can't Read from Drive" or long delays. Slow Response and Poor Video Quality ------------------------------------ The program response and video quality will vary depending on the speed of your processor, CD-ROM drive, and the amount of available RAM. For Windows 3.x users, some steps we recommend which may improve the video playback include that: » You use the SMARTDRIVE disk caching utility and set the cache size for Windows at 512K bytes or smaller, if you are running MS-DOS 6.0 or greater. » You use the /X switch to disable write-back caching, as this can interfere with smooth data transfer from your CD-ROM drive. » You disable CD-ROM caching by using the /U switch. See your DOS manual or on-line DOS help for detailed instructions on making these changes. (Type HELP SMARTDRV at the DOS prompt.)
